Independent Testing Results for Kid’s Crest Color-Changing Toothpaste: Lead & Arsenic Detected

Published March 26, 2025 — Wednesday

A Message from Tamara Rubin:

Our recent independent laboratory analysis has revealed that the Kid’s Crest Color-changing toothpaste, flavored with bubblegum (pictured above), tested positive for Lead and Arsenic. These results were obtained through community-funded, third-party testing conducted by Lead Safe Mama, LLC. Such findings align with previous tests of the same brand’s adult toothpaste, which also showed contamination with Lead and Arsenic (and Mercury). You can view those previous test results here. Scroll down to find the comprehensive lab report and shareable social media graphic illustrating the test outcomes for this specific product.

Our full laboratory report is always accessible at the bottom of this article, ensuring transparency and scientific rigor. Additionally, we maintain a comparative chart of toothpaste and tooth powder products—organized by the amount of Lead detected—which is featured near the top of this article. This particular product falls between points G and H on that chart, indicating the level of Lead contamination relative to other tested products.

It’s important to recognize that manufacturing a toothpaste that tests as “non-detect” for Lead is entirely feasible. To date, we have identified five toothpaste options that tested free of detectable Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, and Arsenic—four of which are marketed specifically for children. These safer alternatives are listed below, and we will update our chart and recommendations accordingly.

  • Federal health agencies agree: there is no safe level of Lead exposure, especially for pregnant women and children.
  • Serving size does not mitigate risk: even small amounts of toxic heavy metals pose health threats.
  • Lead, Cadmium, and Mercury bioaccumulate over time, making chronic, repeated exposure particularly dangerous.
  • Using products contaminated with these toxicants two or three times daily over years amplifies the risk of adverse health effects.
  • Since toothpaste is ingested and absorbed through oral tissues, the risk of systemic toxicity is significant and concerning.

For full context regarding the levels found in this product, please refer to the original lab report at the end of this article. Our comprehensive chart of tested products is continually updated, and we recommend bookmarking our testing page for the latest information.

Important Notice: The detected toxicant levels in this toothpaste are legally permissible.

Specifically, the FDA allows up to 20,000 parts per billion (ppb), or 20 parts per million (ppm), of Lead in toothpaste. As of January 2025, Washington State’s Toxic-Free Cosmetic Act restricts Lead content to just 1,000 ppb (1 ppm). This means that, under current regulations, this product is *legally compliant*. However, legality does not equate to safety, especially for vulnerable populations like children and pregnant women.

Regulatory standards often prioritize industry interests over health, which is why Lead Safe Mama advocates for stricter limits. We are actively supporting the FDA by submitting detailed reports via their online complaint forms, urging reevaluation of safe thresholds for toxicants in consumer products, particularly those marketed to children and expectant mothers.

  • If your child has been using this toothpaste and you’re concerned about potential health impacts, consider discontinuing its use immediately.
  • We recommend exploring safer alternatives—listed below—that have tested non-detect for Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, and Arsenic based on third-party lab analyses.
  • Consult with your healthcare provider about testing your child’s blood Lead levels, especially if you suspect exposure. For more information, see this resource.
  • Remember that typical blood Lead tests may not detect low-level exposure from sources like toothpaste; however, establishing a baseline can be helpful.
  • Persistent exposure to contaminated products can elevate Blood Lead Levels (BLLs) to 1.0–4.0 micrograms per deciliter, which is concerning even at low thresholds.
  • Most clinicians only intervene at BLLs of 3.5 micrograms/dL or higher, but research indicates even lower levels are associated with lifelong health issues.
  • Blood testing thresholds often only detect down to 3.3 micrograms/dL, potentially missing lower but still harmful exposures.

If you wish to report concerns about this product to the FDA, you can do so here.

My personal stance: I would not allow my children to use this product, as any known Lead exposure risks are unacceptable in our home environment.

For those interested in detox protocols to support health after exposure, please read this article. Be cautious: many detox products and protocols are ineffective or even harmful, and may inadvertently increase Lead exposure.
