Comprehensive Report on Radius Fluoride-Free Organic Toothpaste Testing Results

Published March 25, 2025 — Tuesday

A Message from Tamara Rubin:

Recently, our community at Lead Safe Mama, LLC conducted independent, third-party laboratory testing on the Radius brand Fluoride-free Organic Toothpaste, available in Coconut Banana flavor (pictured above). The results revealed detectable levels of Lead, Cadmium, and Arsenic. This testing was community-funded and aimed at providing transparent information about product safety. Below, you will find the shareable social media graphic showcasing these findings, along with the full laboratory report for your review. As with all our articles, the complete original report is linked at the bottom of this page.

The tested product is positioned on our comparative toxicity chart (above, near the top), falling between categories A and B based on the amount of Lead detected. Many community members anticipated (and hoped) that this toothpaste would test as non-detect for heavy metals, given its marketing and branding. However, the findings indicate a significant discrepancy between marketing promises and actual toxicant levels. While this product contained the lowest amount of Lead among those tested so far, it still poses health concerns.

Important considerations:

  • All federal health agencies agree that there is no safe level of Lead exposure, especially for vulnerable groups such as pregnant women and children.
  • Serving size is irrelevant when discussing toxicants like Lead, Cadmium, and Mercury, as even minute amounts are hazardous.
  • Heavy metals bioaccumulate in the human body over time, leading to chronic health issues with repeated exposure.
  • Using a contaminated product multiple times daily over extended periods increases health risks significantly.
  • Oral absorption pathways in products like toothpaste make these risks even more concerning.

To understand the implications of these levels, consult our earlier articles and the latest updated comparative toxicity chart linked on this page. Remember, the levels found in this toothpaste are 100% LEGAL under current regulations because fluoride-free toothpaste is classified as a cosmetic product by the FDA. Legally, cosmetics can contain up to 10,000 ppb (parts per billion) of Lead, which is equivalent to 10 ppm (parts per million). Washington State’s recent Toxic-Free Cosmetic Act restricts Lead to a maximum of 1,000 ppb (1 ppm). Since the detected levels are below these thresholds, the product is considered compliant with existing standards.

However, legality does not equate to safety. The current standards are primarily designed to shield manufacturers from liability rather than to protect human health. We advocate for stronger regulations, especially for products marketed toward children or pregnant women. To contribute to change, we are supporting the FDA by submitting detailed reports via their online complaint form, urging the agency to revise and lower permissible toxicant levels in personal care products.

If your child has been using this toothpaste and you are concerned about potential heavy metal exposure, it’s advisable to cease use immediately. For safer alternatives, we have identified at least five products that tested non-detect for Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, and Arsenic, which are listed below. Consider consulting your healthcare provider about testing your child’s blood Lead levels to establish a baseline or rule out exposure. Blood tests may not detect low-level, chronic exposure from sources like toothpaste; thus, a comprehensive heavy metals panel might be more informative.

Most medical professionals only recommend action when blood Lead levels reach 3.5 micrograms per deciliter or higher. Nevertheless, research indicates that even lower levels can cause lifelong health impairments. It’s also important to note that many standard blood Lead tests have detection thresholds around 3.3 micrograms per deciliter, potentially missing lower but still harmful exposures.

To report concerns or test results, you can file complaints with the FDA through their official site. Personally, I would not allow my children to use this product due to the potential health risks associated with Lead exposure.

If you are interested in detox protocols to mitigate heavy metal accumulation, please refer to our dedicated article linked here. Be cautious of detox products or treatments that promise quick fixes; many are ineffective or can even cause additional exposure. Proper guidance from a healthcare professional is essential.
