A Personal Note from Tamara Rubin – March 13, 2025
Today, I want to share the results of recent laboratory testing on a particular white chocolate product, which has been a personal favorite of mine in the past. The findings are disappointing, especially considering my high standards for safety and my extensive scientific understanding of heavy metal toxicity, particularly Lead. While the Lead levels detected in this product are classified as very low, my ethical commitment to avoiding any sources of Lead contamination leads me to recommend caution. I am actively seeking a safer, organic white chocolate alternative, as I have always enjoyed white chocolate and believe it is possible to find or create products with minimal or no heavy metal contamination.
This specific product, Green & Black’s Organic White Chocolate, tested relatively clean from a heavy metals perspective, and the full lab report is linked below. Consumers might consider choosing this product even with the trace amounts of Lead detected, especially if they plan to dilute it by combining it with foods that tested non-detect for heavy metals—such as organic dairy milk for making white chocolate drinks, or organic Einkorn flour for baking cookies, which we have found to be safer options. An important note is that this white chocolate contains tiny, solid brown specks of organic Madagascar vanilla throughout, which distinguishes it from other white chocolates tested. It’s plausible that the dried, ground vanilla spice might be contributing to the Lead presence, as spices are often contaminated with Lead during processing.
- As always, it’s crucial to remember that all federal agencies agree there is no safe level of Lead exposure, especially for vulnerable groups like pregnant women and children.
- Serving size does not mitigate the risk when dealing with toxic heavy metals like Lead, Cadmium, and Mercury.
- Heavy metals such as Lead bioaccumulate in the human body over time, making chronic exposure particularly dangerous.
- Food-based ingestion of Lead presents a serious health concern that warrants attention and precaution.
To view the complete lab report, scroll to the bottom of this article. It’s important to note that the levels of toxicants detected are fully legal according to current standards. However, legality does not equate to safety, especially for children and pregnant women. Most regulatory thresholds are designed more to shield corporations from liability rather than to ensure consumer safety. For a comprehensive understanding, I recommend watching our documentary film linked on the site.
If you’re interested in learning about detox protocols to support your family’s health after discovering this information, I’ve written an article about it, which you can access through this link. Be aware that many detox products and protocols on the market are ineffective or potentially hazardous, and often do not reduce heavy metal burden as advertised—some may even increase exposure.
