Important Update on FYGG Fluoride-Free Toothpaste Testing Results

Published March 25, 2025 — Tuesday

A Message from Tamara Rubin:

Lead Safe Mama, LLC commissioned independent, third-party laboratory testing of the FYGG Fluoride-Free Toothpaste (shown above in Vanilla Vibes flavor). The results revealed detectable levels of Lead and Arsenic in the product. We want to share these findings transparently with our community, along with the comprehensive lab report and relevant visuals. Please scroll down to view the shareable social media graphic summarizing the test outcomes, as well as the full detailed report located at the bottom of this page.

As with all our product testing articles, the complete original laboratory report is provided for your review. Our comparative chart for toothpaste and tooth powder products (which is regularly updated) positions this product between grades E and F — based on the amount of Lead detected post-testing. Many community members had anticipated that this product would test clean, with non-detect results for all toxicants, given its branding and marketing. Unfortunately, the findings are a significant disappointment for those expecting a safer alternative.

  • It’s crucial to remember that all federal agencies concur: there is no safe level of Lead exposure, especially for vulnerable groups such as pregnant women and children.
  • Serving size is irrelevant when discussing toxicants like Lead, Cadmium, and Mercury, which are highly potent and dangerous.
  • Heavy metals such as Lead bioaccumulate in the body over time, making chronic daily exposure particularly harmful.
  • Using a product that contains unsafe levels of toxicants like Lead repeatedly over years (as with most toothpastes used multiple times daily) poses a serious health risk.
  • Since toothpaste is ingested and absorbed through the oral mucosa, this pathway heightens concerns over potential toxicant absorption.

For full context on the levels detected, please refer to our latest comparative chart and earlier articles testing various toothpastes and powders. This chart is available on our website and updated regularly, serving as a valuable resource for making informed choices.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: The toxicant levels found in this toothpaste are legally permissible.

Specifically, as a cosmetic product, the FDA allows up to 10,000 ppb (parts per billion) of Lead, equivalent to 10 ppm (parts per million). Furthermore, the recent Washington State Toxic-Free Cosmetic Act (effective January 2025) limits Lead content to 1,000 ppb (1 ppm). Since the detected levels in this product are below both thresholds, they are considered legally compliant. However, it’s vital to recognize that legality does not equate to safety, particularly for children and pregnant women. Current regulations primarily serve to shield manufacturers from liability rather than to ensure consumer safety. We encourage consumers to advocate for stricter standards, especially for products marketed toward vulnerable populations.

  • If your child has been using this toothpaste and you’re concerned about potential Lead exposure, consider discontinuing use immediately.
  • We recommend choosing from our curated list of safer alternative toothpastes—five products that have tested non-detect for Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, and Arsenic in independent labs. You can find these options below.
  • Consult your healthcare provider for blood Lead level testing if you suspect exposure or wish to establish a baseline.
  • Blood testing might not detect very low levels of toxicants typically found in toothpaste, but it can help identify significant exposure, especially if testing is done before symptoms appear.
  • Persistent exposure from contaminated sources can elevate Blood Lead Levels (BLLs) into the 1.0–4.0 microgram range, which can have lifelong health implications.
  • It’s important to note that most clinicians only act when BLLs reach 3.5 μg/dL or higher; however, even lower levels may cause adverse health effects.
  • To report concerns or toxicant findings, you can file a complaint with the FDA through their online portal.
  • In my personal opinion, I would not allow my own children to use this product due to its potential risks.

Beware of ineffective or dangerous detox products that may inadvertently increase exposure or cause harm.
