DIY Floating Wall Shelves with Hidden Drawer: Step-by-Step Guide

Transform Your Space with Custom DIY Wall Shelves

Looking for a practical yet stylish way to maximize your storage without sacrificing precious floor space? These innovative DIY wall shelves are the perfect solution! Not only do they provide functional storage, but their sleek design also adds a charming touch to any room. Imagine them adorning your bathroom, bedroom, or living area—adding both style and practicality.

The standout feature of these shelves is the integrated hidden drawer, ideal for discreetly storing makeup, hair accessories, or other small essentials. Their minimalist aesthetic makes them a versatile addition to any decor style, from modern to rustic.

Effortless Construction & Easy Installation

The best part? These shelves are incredibly simple to build and mount. The shelf box is assembled swiftly using strategically placed pocket holes that remain concealed, ensuring a clean appearance. The drawer is designed with just a few brad nails, allowing it to slide seamlessly into the opening—no complex drawer slides required. This makes it an excellent project for beginners looking to boost their woodworking confidence. Plus, hanging these shelves is straightforward—simply attach them to the wall through the back support board, ensuring you secure them into wall studs for maximum stability. Want to customize your setup? If a drawer isn’t necessary or if you prefer a more gallery-like display, I also designed a version with an adjustable center shelf that matches the aesthetic.

  • Power drill and impact driver (for efficient screwing)
  • Speed square for precise measurements
  • Multi-mark measuring tool for versatile marking
  • Brad nailer for secure fastening
  • Sander for smooth finishing

Step 1: Preparing Your Sides

Begin by drawing a gentle curve on the front top corner of each side piece. Use a small round object or template to trace the curve smoothly, then sand to refine the shape. Mark a point 1/2″ in from the top and 1/2″ down from the front corner. For accuracy, measure and drill a 3/8″ hole 3/8″ deep at this point, ensuring the hole is centered. Remember to mirror these markings on both sides for symmetry. Sand the curved edges for a seamless finish.

Step 2: Assembling the Shelves

Set your pocket hole jig to 3/4″ material thickness. Drill three pocket holes into each side of your shelf boards. Attach the top shelf to one side, positioning it 2 3/4″ below the top edge. Secure the bottom shelf flush with the bottom edge. For the larger shelf, position and attach the third middle shelf 3 3/4″ above the bottom shelf. Use wood glue and 1 1/4″ pocket hole screws for all connections. To conceal the pocket holes, face them inward or towards hidden areas. Attach the back support boards with two pocket holes on each end, securing them to the sides accordingly. For the support placement, align it just below the top or above the top shelf, depending on the shelf size. Insert the dowel into the side support holes, then position the side panels, ensuring the shelves are aligned. Secure all parts with screws and fill any visible holes with plugs or wood filler. Sand everything smooth for a polished look.

Step 3: Crafting the Hidden Drawer

Draw a curved front on the drawer panels similar to the sides. Use a round object to trace the curve, then cut and sand for a smooth finish. Assemble the drawer by attaching the sides to the bottom with glue and nails, ensuring they are flush. Attach the front and back panels, securing with glue and nails, minimizing visible nail holes. Fit the drawer into the shelf opening, ensuring it slides smoothly.

Step 4: Finishing & Mounting

Sand the entire unit to remove rough edges, then apply your preferred stain or paint. For a rich, dark finish, I stained mine with Minwax Dark Walnut. To hang, level the shelf and secure it into wall studs using 2″ wood screws through the back support. If a stud isn’t available, use heavy-duty wall anchors, but ensure at least one screw is anchored into a stud for stability.
