I’m absolutely captivated by my newly crafted chunky coffee table! Inspired by high-end retail designs that often come with a hefty price tag, I decided to create my own budget-friendly version that doesn’t compromise on style or quality. The feature I adore most is the visible end grain on the legs that gracefully meet the tabletop. Additionally, the charming arched details on the sides add a sophisticated touch. These simple yet impactful features are incredibly easy to incorporate, elevating the overall aesthetic of this DIY project.
Why This Coffee Table is a Must-Build
Despite its elegant design, this coffee table remains straightforward to assemble. With careful measurement and precise cuts, you can complete this project within just a few hours. Once finished, you’ll be excited to showcase matching side tables and a sofa table, which are planned to complement this piece perfectly. To keep costs down, I utilized pine 2×4 and 2×6 boards. While the only 4×4 boards available were fir, their similar appearance after sanding makes them an excellent choice. The slight reddish hue of the legs adds character and highlights the intricate top details. For an even more cohesive look, you might consider gluing two 2×4 boards together to mimic the grain and color of the purchased 4x4s, adjusting measurements accordingly to account for the narrower width.

Step-by-Step Assembly Instructions
Step 1 – Cut the Arched Ends
Align the two top center boards and double-check their width. Use a string tied to a pencil to sketch the arch, ensuring it spans from one side to the other and touches the center line. Carefully cut out the arch on both end boards with a jigsaw, following your drawn line.
Step 2 – Construct the Side Panels
Set your pocket hole jig for 1 1/2-inch thick material. Drill two pocket holes at each end of the arched boards on the top half. Attach these to the leg boards, making sure they are flush at the top and front edge. Secure with 2 1/2-inch pocket hole screws and wood glue. Repeat for the second side panel.
Step 3 – Assemble the Top Frame
Position the top center boards between the legs and clamp tightly. Measure the gap and cut the side boards accordingly. Drill pocket holes into the top boards, aligning with your measurements. Glue and clamp the pieces, then secure with screws. Ensure the top side boards are centered around the legs, and drill additional pocket holes in the top to attach it to the legs as shown in the plans.
Step 4 – Attach the Top
Place the assembled top between the legs. If tight, use clamps to gently open the legs. Secure the top with wood glue and pocket screws through the pre-drilled holes. Check for flush alignment and fill any gaps with stainable wood filler to achieve a flawless look. Fill the underside pocket holes if desired.
Step 5 – Finishing Touches
Sand the entire piece smoothly, then apply stain or paint of your choice. I prefer stain to showcase the natural grain and end grain details of the wood for an authentic, handcrafted appearance.
