Building Tips & Techniques
Start by ripping plywood sheets into manageable strips before cross-cutting to final dimensions. For the drawer fronts and top, apply edge banding with an iron to cover plywood edges, or alternatively, cut drawer fronts from solid wood boards like 1×8 and 1×10 for a more traditional look.
Step 1: Construct the Sides
Drill pocket holes at specified locations to assemble the side panels, attaching trim and panels with 1 1/4-inch and 2 1/2-inch pocket screws, respectively. Ensure the panels are flush and securely glued for stability.
Step 2: Build the Front Frame
Attach the front and back trim pieces, centering dividers and using pocket holes to secure. Face the pocket holes inward or downward to hide them from view, maintaining a clean appearance.
Step 3: Assemble the Frame
Connect the sides with the front frame, aligning with the specified setback. Attach the back panels and support pieces, ensuring everything is square and sturdy. Optionally, add a plywood back panel for a finished look, though an open back promotes airflow and ease of access.
Step 4: Build the Drawer Boxes
Create grooves inside the drawer sides for bottom panels. Assemble the boxes using pocket screws or staples, then insert the bottoms into the grooves. Round over internal edges for safety and a refined finish.
Step 5: Install Drawers & Fronts
Attach the drawer slides, leveling them with a plywood spacer if needed. Install drawer fronts flush to the frame, leaving a consistent gap, and secure with screws. Attach handles or pulls to complete the look.
Step 6: Attach the Top & Finish
