Comprehensive Report on Weleda Children’s Oral Care Fluoride-Free Tooth Gel

Published: March 9, 2025 — Sunday

A Personal Message from Tamara Rubin:

This evaluation focuses on the Weleda Oral Care Fluoride-Free Children’s Tooth Gel in Spearmint Flavor, which is depicted above. Our recent laboratory analysis indicates that the product contains detectable levels of both Lead and Arsenic. Notably, the Arsenic concentration is within what current standards deem ‘safe’—even under the strictest guidelines proposed in 2021. However, the presence of Lead, although lower than what we typically find in most tested toothpastes, remains a significant concern, especially considering this product is specifically marketed for use by young children. Since this product is manufactured and distributed by a Swiss-based company, discovering these levels is particularly disappointing. I was hopeful that it would test free of toxic metals.

Please scroll down to view the shareable social media graphic illustrating the test results and access the full original lab report for this product. As with all our articles, the lab report is provided in its raw form. Our comparative chart for toothpaste and tooth powder products, including this one, is located just above this section for easy reference.

  • As reiterated by Lead Safe Mama, LLC, all federal health agencies agree that there is no safe level of Lead exposure—especially for pregnant women and children.
  • Serving size does not mitigate the risks posed by toxicants like Lead, Cadmium, and Mercury.
  • Heavy metals such as Lead and Arsenic bioaccumulate in the human body over time, particularly with consistent, daily exposure.
  • Repeated use of a product containing unsafe levels of toxicants—up to two or three times daily over years—poses a tangible health risk, especially when used by children or pregnant women.
  • The oral ingestion pathway with toothpastes amplifies concerns, as these products are intended for direct contact with the mouth.

The Toxicant Levels in This Toothpaste Are Legally Permissible

It’s important to understand that the detected levels of toxicants in this toothpaste are not illegal under current regulations. The FDA classifies fluoride-free toothpaste as a cosmetic product, which is legally allowed to contain up to 10,000 parts per billion (ppb) of Lead—equivalent to 10 parts per million (ppm). Meanwhile, the new Washington State Toxic-Free Cosmetic Act, effective January 2025, restricts Lead content in cosmetics to 1,000 ppb (1 ppm). Both standards consider the total content of Lead, independent of serving size, making this product compliant with existing regulations.

However, legal does not equate to safe or advisable, particularly for vulnerable populations like children and pregnant women. These regulatory standards primarily aim to limit liability for manufacturers rather than protect health. Our work involves reporting these findings to the FDA via their online complaint system, hoping to persuade regulatory bodies to lower permissible thresholds—particularly for products marketed towards children or women of reproductive age.

If your child has been using this toothpaste and you are concerned about potential Lead exposure, consider discontinuing use immediately. You might also request a blood Lead level test through your healthcare provider. For additional guidance, visit our article on detoxification strategies. Remember, many detox products on the market are ineffective or potentially harmful, and some may inadvertently increase Lead exposure.
