Tools & Materials You Will Need

Essential Tools for the Project

  • Miter saw: A larger sliding miter saw is recommended for precision cuts, but a basic model works well for most projects. I recently upgraded to a bigger saw, but my previous inexpensive miter saw served me wonderfully for several builds.
  • Circular saw: Ideal for cutting larger pieces of wood with straight edges.
  • Pocket hole jig: The Kreg 720 is highly recommended for frequent projects, but the less expensive 520 or 320 jigs are perfect for beginners or occasional use.
  • Drill and Impact driver: For drilling holes and fastening screws efficiently.
  • Brad nailer: Ensures clean, quick nailing for assembly.
  • Measuring and marking tools: Including a speed square and multi-mark measuring device.
  • Clamps and Sander: To hold pieces steady and smooth out surfaces.

Supplies Needed

  • Wood pieces: (3) 1×2 boards, 8 feet long; (2) 3/8″ x 4′ project boards, 3 feet long; (2) 3/8″ x 3′ project boards, 3 feet long; (2) 3/8″ x 2′ project boards, 3 feet long.
  • Screws and fasteners: 1 1/4″ pocket hole screws, 1″ brad nails, 3/8″ #6 wood screws.
  • Adhesives: Wood glue and construction adhesive suitable for glass and wood.
  • Additional hardware: Small knobs (7), 1″ square wall hangers (6), 18″ round mirror, 2 D-ring picture hangers, 2 heavy-duty hooks.

Overall Dimensions

The completed ladder stands approximately 60 inches tall, with the mirror reaching 68 inches at the top. Its width measures around 19 ¾ inches, and it extends about 6-8 inches from the wall at the base, creating a compact yet spacious addition to your entryway.

Step 1: Create the Tapered Sides

Begin by measuring and marking the taper on the bottom of both side boards according to the plans. Use a circular saw to carefully cut along the lines, then sand the edges smoothly. For a softer look, round the bottom edges slightly. If you’re new to freehand cutting, employ a guide to keep your cuts straight and precise.

Step 2: Assemble the Ladder Frame

Mark the center on the top edge of one side board, then draw a line at a 5-8 degree angle downward. Drill a pocket hole near the top of the first rung and attach it along this angled line, ensuring the top is flush with the side board. Repeat the process for the remaining rungs, spacing them evenly as per the plans. Attach the second side in the same manner, ensuring all rungs are aligned and securely fastened with glue and pocket screws.

Step 3: Build and Attach Storage Bins

Construct the storage bins by attaching sides to the bottoms with glue and nails, then adding the front and back panels. For slatted bins, leave a ½” gap between slats. Secure square hangers to the back of each bin to make them adjustable and removable. Position the bins on the rungs, customizing their placement based on your needs.

Step 4: Attach the Mirror and Final Details

Before mounting the mirror, drill holes on the sides for knobs if you wish to mimic the decorative look. Use a suitable adhesive to attach the mirror to its support rung, following the adhesive manufacturer’s instructions. To prevent tipping, install D-ring hangers on the top rung and secure the ladder to the wall with heavy-duty hooks. Add knobs or hooks at the top for hanging items, and arrange your bins for easy access. Congratulations—you’ve created a functional, stylish entryway ladder that keeps your space organized and welcoming.
