Introduction to the DIY Nightstand Project
If you’re someone who appreciates having essential items right beside your bed, building a custom nightstand is a perfect solution. This DIY project features a simple yet elegant design with three spacious drawers, providing ample storage to keep your nighttime essentials organized and easily accessible. The drawers can be conveniently hidden when closed, maintaining a clean and clutter-free appearance in your bedroom.
This nightstand is an excellent addition to a classic bedroom set, and it can be customized to match other furniture pieces. Be sure to check out the matching plans for a six-drawer dresser, four-drawer dresser, tall seven-drawer dresser, and a one-drawer nightstand to create a cohesive bedroom ensemble.
Two Versatile Nightstand Sizes for Your Space
Finding the right-sized nightstand can be challenging, especially in modern bedrooms where space and style demands vary. To accommodate different room sizes and personal preferences, I designed two versions of this nightstand:
- Standard Width: 22 inches wide, perfect for minimalist or smaller spaces.
- Wider Version: 28 inches wide, ideal if you like to keep multiple items close at hand, such as a lamp, books, lotion, glasses, or a favorite nighttime tea.
The larger model offers more surface area and storage, making it especially convenient for those who like to keep everything within reach. Conversely, the standard size provides a sleek, clutter-free appearance while still offering sufficient storage in the three drawers.
Complete Bedroom Set Options
Enhance your bedroom’s functionality and aesthetic by building a matching dresser set. The plans include:
- Classic 4-Drawer Dresser
- Spacious 6-Drawer Dresser
- Elegant Tall 7-Drawer Dresser
- Single Drawer Nightstand with Shelf
Creating a coordinated bedroom set ensures a harmonious look and provides ample storage for all your clothing and personal items.
Step-by-Step Guide to Building Your Nightstand with Drawers
Tools & Materials Needed
Recommended Tools:
- Miter saw – for precise angled cuts. I recently upgraded to a larger sliding miter saw, but my previous inexpensive model served me well for many projects.
- Circular saw with guide track – for straight cuts.
- Pocket hole jig – essential for strong, hidden joints. I use the Kreg 720, but the 520 or 320 models are great for beginners or smaller workshops.
- Drill and impact driver – for driving screws and drilling holes efficiently.
- Multi-measuring tool – for accurate measurements.
- Right angle clamp – to hold pieces securely during assembly.
- Sander – for smoothing surfaces and edges.
- Optional pneumatic stapler, trim router, and brad nailer – for finishing touches and detailed work.

Tips for Efficient Plywood Breakdown
To maximize your material usage, I recommend placing plywood sheets on a piece of rigid foam insulation. Use a RipCut guide for ripping sheets into strips, followed by cross-cutting to size. For the edges of the drawer fronts and top, apply iron-on edge banding to cover the plywood edges seamlessly. Alternatively, you can cut solid wood drawer fronts from 1×6 and 1×8 boards for a more traditional look.
Creating the Drawer Fronts and Top
For a stylish appearance, add a 1/8-inch deep groove down the center of the top drawer with a circular saw or router to mimic two separate drawers. If needed, enhance the visual gap by staining or painting the groove area darker, creating a subtle separation.
Assembly Instructions
1. Build the Sides
Drill pocket holes at the ends of the side trim pieces, then attach them to the vertical panels, ensuring they are flush. Secure with pocket hole screws and wood glue. Assemble two sides, each with legs and trim, preparing for final assembly.
2. Connect the Sides
Attach the front trim pieces between the sides using pocket holes, ensuring correct spacing and alignment. Attach the back panels with screws and glue, leaving the back open or covering it with plywood if desired.
3. Construct the Drawer Boxes
Cut grooves inside the drawer sides for the bottoms, then assemble the boxes with pocket holes or staples. Install the bottoms into the grooves, and optionally round over the inside edges for smoothness.
4. Install Drawers and Fronts
Mount the drawer slides inside the frame, then insert the drawers, ensuring proper clearance. Attach drawer fronts, aligning them flush and using spacers for even gaps. Secure fronts with brad nails or screws, then add hardware.
5. Attach the Top and Finish
Place the top on the assembled frame, securing with countersunk screws at designated points. Label and replace the drawers, then apply your preferred finish—paint, stain, or clear coat—to complete the project.
Final Touches and Tips
Place your finished nightstand next to your bed, fill the drawers with your essentials, and enjoy a beautifully crafted piece that combines functionality with style. Happy building!
