How to Build a Spacious 6-Drawer Dresser: A Complete DIY Guide

Transform Your Bedroom with a Custom 6-Drawer Dresser

If finding enough storage space for your clothes is a constant struggle, then this comprehensive DIY project is perfect for you. This large, 6-drawer dresser offers incredible storage capacity, far surpassing the limited space of typical small dressers. Featuring two shallower drawers on top and four deep drawers below, it provides ample room to organize all your clothing and accessories efficiently. Its classic design makes it a versatile addition to any bedroom, and it can be coordinated with matching furniture pieces to create a cohesive look.

Design Inspiration: A Budget-Friendly Farmhouse Dresser Dupe

I’ve always admired the rustic charm of Pottery Barn’s farmhouse series, but the price point is often prohibitive. That’s why I decided to build my own version of the 6-drawer dresser at a fraction of the cost, using high-quality alder wood. My custom dresser captures the timeless farmhouse aesthetic without sacrificing style or functionality. The six spacious drawers are perfect for storing various clothing items, and the warm tones of alder add a cozy, inviting feel to the room. I opted for a natural finish, sealing the wood to preserve its beautiful color and texture, avoiding stains to highlight the wood’s inherent beauty.

Creating a Matching Bedroom Set

Love this dresser? You can complete your bedroom with additional matching furniture pieces. I’ve prepared detailed plans for a Classic 4 Drawer Dresser, Tall 7 Drawer Dresser, 3 Drawer Nightstand, and a 1 Drawer Nightstand with Shelf. These pieces will help you assemble a cohesive and functional bedroom set that combines style with practicality.

Building Tips and Techniques

Use your circular saw with a RipCut guide or an AccuCut for ripping plywood sheets into strips. For cross cutting, consider an inexpensive crosscut guide. To enhance the appearance, apply ironed edge banding around the drawer fronts to cover plywood edges, or opt for solid wood drawer fronts from 1×8 or 1×10 boards for a refined look.

Step 1: Construct the Sides

Begin by drilling pocket holes in the edges of the side trim pieces and the perimeter of the side panels. Assemble the side panels by attaching trim to the top and bottom, ensuring the panels are flush with the back of the trim. Secure with pocket hole screws and wood glue. Attach the third side trim piece 1 ½ inches above the bottom of the leg, centered, with the pocket hole on the underside for a hidden finish. Repeat on the opposite side.

Step 2: Build the Front Frame

Drill pocket holes in the ends of front, back, divider, and center pieces. Assemble the front frame by attaching the center dividers and side trim pieces with pocket hole screws and glue, ensuring proper spacing. Use clamps to hold pieces tightly during assembly. Attach the top and bottom trim to complete the frame, hiding pocket holes appropriately.

Step 3: Assemble the Frame

Connect the sides with the front frame using pre-drilled pocket holes. Position the front frame ¼ inch back from the front of the sides for a clean appearance. Attach the back panels with pocket screws, ensuring they are flush and centered. Install the back trim at 1 ½ inches from the bottom, aligning with the legs. For added stability, add a center support and back panel if desired.

Step 4: Build the Drawer Boxes

Cut a ¼ inch wide, ¼ inch deep groove inside the drawer side pieces at ¼ inch from the bottom using a table saw or router. Assemble the boxes by attaching sides to fronts with wood glue and staples or pocket screws. Insert the bottom panel into the groove, then secure the back panel. Repeat for all six drawers. Optionally, round over the inside edges for smoothness.

Step 5: Install Drawers and Fronts

Attach drawer slides to the sides, positioning them 7/8 inch above the bottom of each drawer. Use spacers or playing cards to ensure level installation. Mount the drawer fronts inside the frame, leaving a ⅛-inch gap around for a neat appearance. Use temporary fasteners or double-sided tape to align, then secure permanently with screws. Add drawer pulls centered on each front.

Step 6: Attach the Top and Final Touches

Once all drawers are installed, place the top on the dresser, aligning it with the back edge and overhanging sides by 1 inch. Secure with screws from underneath. Reinsert drawers and complete any finishing touches, such as sealing, staining, or painting. Your custom-made six-drawer dresser is now ready to enhance your bedroom with both style and generous storage.
