Building Process Overview
Step 1: Assemble the Cube Frame
Set your pocket hole jig for 3/4-inch material. Drill pocket holes on both sides of the cube shelves and center wall panels. Connect the sections using 1 1/4-inch pocket screws and wood glue, following the provided diagram. To achieve a clean appearance, you may choose to attach the face frame with pocket holes or finish nails, ensuring all pieces are flush and aligned.
Step 2: Attach the Face Frame
Construct the face frame separately to prevent cracking or warping. Use clamps to keep it flat during assembly. Once built, attach it to the cabinet box, aligning flush on the top and sides, and centered on the walls. Adjust the position to ensure the openings match your intended design.
Step 3: Final Details and Backing
Secure bottom supports inside the bottom panel, then rout a 1/4-inch groove along the edges for the back panel. Insert the plywood back, and reinforce with nails. If adding doors, cut and finish plywood pieces, attach hinges, and install handles. Alternatively, for a clean look, leave the sides open or add decorative trim.
Step 4: Sand, Finish, and Add Legs
Fill all nail and pocket hole holes with wood filler, then sand until smooth. Apply your chosen stain, paint, or sealant. Attach furniture legs at each corner and optionally in the center for stability. If your design includes adjustable shelves, drill pin holes in the sides and insert shelves to your preferred height. Your custom cube console is now ready to showcase or store your belongings!
