Transform Your Home with a Custom DIY Cube Storage Console

Maximize Your Space with a Stylish DIY Cube Storage Console

Feeling limited by your current storage options? Discover how a thoughtfully crafted piece of DIY furniture can dramatically enhance your home’s organization and aesthetic. The secret weapon? A beautifully designed cube storage shelf that combines function with style. This project transforms ordinary storage units into statement pieces that elevate your decor while providing ample storage.

While traditional cube (or cubby) shelves often evoke images of inexpensive, particle board furniture from big box stores, this version is a step above. Crafted from premium solid wood, it offers durability and elegance. When complemented with chic legs and a polished finish, it morphs into a sophisticated console table that seamlessly fits into modern or rustic interiors. It’s a DIY project that’s accessible yet impressive, perfect for those looking to add character and practicality to their space.

Enhanced Storage Solutions Inspired by the Kallax Shelf

If you love the versatility of the Ikea Kallax shelf but crave a more refined look, this custom console is your ideal solution. The design features six central cubby sections, perfectly sized to accommodate fabric bins or plastic storage boxes compatible with the Kallax system. Flanking these are side sections, which can be customized with adjustable or fixed shelves, or even doors, to hide away clutter and create a sleek appearance. The entire build process is surprisingly straightforward—simply cut plywood pieces with a circular saw, assemble using sturdy pocket screws, and then personalize with stain or paint to match your decor.

Step-by-Step Guide to Building Your Cube Storage Console

Tools & Materials You Will Need

Essential Tools:

  • Miter saw – I recommend a large sliding model for precision cuts, though a basic saw works fine for simpler projects.
  • Circular saw with guide track for accurate, straight cuts
  • Pocket hole jig – I use the Kreg 720 for frequent projects, but the 520 or 320 models are excellent for beginners or small workshops.
  • Electric drill for drilling pilot holes
  • Impact driver – optional but highly recommended for quicker assembly
  • Clamping tools such as right-angle clamps and face clamps
  • Finish nailer for secure fastening
  • Trim router for detail work and groove routing
  • Sander for smooth finishing
  • Optional: Shelf pin jig for adjustable shelves

Building Process Overview

Step 1: Assemble the Cube Frame

Set your pocket hole jig for 3/4-inch material. Drill pocket holes on both sides of the cube shelves and center wall panels. Connect the sections using 1 1/4-inch pocket screws and wood glue, following the provided diagram. To achieve a clean appearance, you may choose to attach the face frame with pocket holes or finish nails, ensuring all pieces are flush and aligned.

Step 2: Attach the Face Frame

Construct the face frame separately to prevent cracking or warping. Use clamps to keep it flat during assembly. Once built, attach it to the cabinet box, aligning flush on the top and sides, and centered on the walls. Adjust the position to ensure the openings match your intended design.

Step 3: Final Details and Backing

Secure bottom supports inside the bottom panel, then rout a 1/4-inch groove along the edges for the back panel. Insert the plywood back, and reinforce with nails. If adding doors, cut and finish plywood pieces, attach hinges, and install handles. Alternatively, for a clean look, leave the sides open or add decorative trim.

Step 4: Sand, Finish, and Add Legs

Fill all nail and pocket hole holes with wood filler, then sand until smooth. Apply your chosen stain, paint, or sealant. Attach furniture legs at each corner and optionally in the center for stability. If your design includes adjustable shelves, drill pin holes in the sides and insert shelves to your preferred height. Your custom cube console is now ready to showcase or store your belongings!
