A Personal Message from Tamara Rubin:
Regrettably, the Colgate Watermelon Burst Toothpaste containing fluoride has tested positive for unsafe levels of both Lead and Mercury. This finding aligns with our previous testing of another Colgate product, which you can view here. The shared ingredient among these products that raises concern is Hydrated Silica. Based on our extensive testing of various toothpastes, Hydrated Silica appears to be a significant indicator of potential Lead contamination. For reference, you can see additional examples of contaminated toothpaste containing Hydrated Silica on our comprehensive toothpaste contamination chart.
The test results are particularly disheartening to me personally, as I previously used this product with my children during their early years. It’s important to note that the detected levels of Lead and Mercury are within the legal limits — the federal thresholds for Lead are 10,000 parts per billion (ppb) in fluoride-free toothpaste and 20,000 ppb in fluoride-containing varieties. However, all relevant health authorities agree that there is no safe level of Lead exposure, especially for children. Our mission at Lead Safe Mama, LLC is to advocate for safer, cleaner products and to hold brands accountable, especially those marketed directly to children.
Given that children often swallow toothpaste, the presence of heavy metals in popular, mainstream products raises significant health concerns. Through our community-driven laboratory testing initiative, we’ve identified five toothpaste options that tested as non-detect for heavy metals, with detection limits noted in each lab report. These safer choices are linked on our toothpaste chart landing page and listed below for your convenience.
