Follow-Up on Washington State’s Toxic-Free Cosmetics Law and EWG’s Product Safety Ratings

Published March 11, 2025 — Tuesday

In light of recent discussions within the Lead Poisoning Prevention with Lead Safe Mama Facebook Group, I felt it was essential to reach out once more to the Environmental Working Group (EWG). This follow-up comes after the enactment of Washington State’s groundbreaking Toxic-Free Cosmetics Law, which has been fully enforceable since January 2025. Despite this legislative milestone, EWG continues to list and promote products on their website that contain hazardous levels of lead and other toxic substances, often assigning them high safety ratings.

To address this inconsistency, I composed a detailed letter to EWG, which includes three screenshots of their website taken today and four attached images demonstrating current product ratings and listings. You can scroll down to view the entire correspondence. This ongoing dialogue aims to advocate for consumer safety and ensure that product evaluations reflect the latest legal standards and scientific findings.
