Comprehensive Test Results and Safety Insights for Davids Premium Toothpaste

Published: March 9, 2025 — Sunday

A Personal Message from Tamara Rubin:

Our recent testing of Davids Premium Toothpaste in Natural Peppermint flavor (pictured above) revealed detectable levels of both Lead and Arsenic. These levels surpass those found in many other tested oral care products. The detection thresholds for Cadmium and Mercury in this report are set at very low levels, leaving us uncertain whether these toxicants are present in concerning amounts. Please scroll further to view the shareable social media graphic summarizing the test results, along with the full original laboratory report at the bottom of this article. Our updated comparative chart for toothpaste and tooth powders, which now includes this product, is located just above this section.

As always, it’s critical to remember: All federal agencies agree that there is no safe level of Lead exposure, especially for pregnant women and children. The notion that serving size mitigates risk is a misconception. Lead, Cadmium, and Mercury are heavy metals that bioaccumulate in the human body over time, particularly with regular, chronic exposure. When a product containing these toxicants is used multiple times daily over years—such as in the case of many toothpastes—the potential for adverse health effects significantly increases. Since toothpastes are ingested orally, this pathway heightens concern compared to topical-only cosmetic products.

For full context on the levels found, please refer to our earlier articles on toothpaste safety, as well as the most recent version of our comprehensive testing chart linked here. Bookmark this page for ongoing updates.

The Levels of Toxicants Detected in this Toothpaste Are Legally Permissible

The concentrations of Lead and other heavy metals found in this toothpaste are not illegal under current regulations. Specifically, the FDA classifies fluoride-free toothpaste as a cosmetic product, which is legally permitted to contain up to 10,000 parts per billion (ppb) of Lead—that’s equivalent to 10 parts per million (ppm). Additionally, the recent Washington State Toxic-Free Cosmetic Act, enacted in January 2025, restricts Lead content in cosmetics to a maximum of 1,000 ppb (1 ppm). Given these standards, the tested levels of Lead in this product fall within legal limits.

It’s important to emphasize that legal does not equate to safe or advisable, particularly for vulnerable populations like children and pregnant women. These regulatory thresholds primarily serve to protect manufacturers from liability rather than ensuring consumer safety. We are actively collaborating with the FDA by submitting detailed reports of our findings via their online complaint portal, advocating for stricter, health-protective standards for oral care products—especially those marketed for children or women of reproductive age.

If your child has been using this toothpaste and you’re concerned about potential Lead exposure, consider consulting your healthcare provider about blood Lead level testing. You can also file a formal complaint or report with the FDA via their official website. If you suspect false advertising—claiming this product as “Premium” or “Natural” while it contains detectable toxicants—you might want to consult your local legal authorities to explore possible false advertising claims. For further guidance on detoxing and supporting your family’s health, please read our dedicated article linked here. Be cautious: many detox products on the market are ineffective or potentially harmful and might inadvertently increase Lead exposure instead of reducing it.
