Preventing Skin Rash and Hives When Trimming Cannabis

Dear Cheri,

Even though I have been smoking cannabis for 45 years, because of your videos and encouragement, I recently took the lunge and started growing my own.  It’s great.  I love the cannabis I grow and it’s a fun hobby for me.  However, every time I trim, I come away with hives or some sort of rash on my hands and arms.  Have you ever heard of this and do you know how to prevent skin rash or hives when trimming cannabis?

I can relate!  This same thing happens to me when trimming as I have sensitive skin.  Interestingly, this is only when trimming the plant, I have no trouble using cannabis infused topicals, so obviously whatever is irritating my skin is in the raw plant itself.

How to prevent skin rash when trimming?

Try these tips:

  • Always wear gloves when trimming.  This also prevents your hands from getting sticky and you having to use a bunch of alcohol to clean them.
  • Keep your arms covered.  Something with long sleeves is the preferable trimming attire.
  • If it’s too hot to wear long sleeves, try wearing cooling gardeners sleeves.  Usually warn to protect folks from sun exposure, these sheer sleeves keep your arms covered and likewise prevent the plant from touching your skin.
  • Another option is to put a protective coating on your arms.  In this case, the heavier and greasier the better.  For instance, petroleum jelly works well.  One downside is the leaves and trimmings will stick to it.  Also, it will eventually absorb into your skin and then your left making contact with the plant again.  So while it’s not optimal, it’s better than nothing.
